Smart For Life Protein Bar Review

A while back I was unhappy to discover that the Protein Bars I was using from Premier Protein contained the artificial sweetner sucralose. I have since finished with that brand of bar and moved onto something much better.

I have been using Smart for Life brand Protein Bars for several months now and I’m very happy.

The first thing that immediately impressed me was all of the things that they don’t have:

When I purchased my first box of these at Costco, I wasn’t even thinking about being Gluten-Free yet. It has extra value to me now.

The nutritional info is encouraging. 20 grams of protein with only 190 calories! And that calorie number isn’t because of artificial sweetners!

But, with the great nutritional info and lacking all sorts of bad things, something had to give. Although few protein bars taste great, this one isn’t anything special in the taste category either. They each have a nice, thin chocolate outer coating.

The inside texture varies from awesome to awful. The protein powder inside is sometimes compressed and has a texture like rice crispy squares. But, when it’s not compressed, it’s more like sand.

But I do really like them. I’ll be bringing them with me to snack on after hard workouts, and likely during travelling too. I like them so much I just bought two more boxes from Costco!

Their website says its useful not only as a protein bar, but also as a meal replacement. At the Walt Disney World Dopey Challenge in January, I will have to leave the hotel room around 3:30am for each of the 4 races. That is long before breakfast will be available, so I hope to use these as “breakfast” before each race. I’m going to start experimenting with these before my weekend morning runs.
