In 2014, I trained using a program developed by Dr. Jack Daniels. I was quite happy with the progress of that program and I have a number of posts tagged that indicate how much I enjoyed it. Some of my friends have also started incorporating parts of the Jack Daniel’s program into their speed training.   So, this year, I’m experimenting with a training program from another famous author: Ben N. Jerry’s How To Run.   I haven’t finished reading this yet, but I think it’s a very promising approach. It’s a radically different than anything I’ve ready before on[…continue reading]

There’s No Such Thing As “Fit”

You’ll have to excuse the inflammatory title. It’s meant to be eye-catching, but not entirely misleading. I’ve been on an interesting journey this winter: I have been exceptionally busy, and with limited time (and lousy weather) I didn’t run as much as I have in previous years. As a result, my running fitness is pretty poor by comparison (see my time from the recent Chilly Half-Marathon). And I’m heavier than I’ve been in a long time. But, does that mean I’m currently “un-fit”? I am winding up a person training contract that had me going to the gym 3-times a week. If[…continue reading]

7 weeks to a half-marathon?!

So, I’ve been slacking and in a funk. I haven’t run much since the Mississauga Half-Marathon. I took almost a whole month off, then injured my knee, back, and ankle. I’ve actually been fully-healed for weeks, but haven’t had the will to get out and really start training again. As my slacking intensified, I’ve realized I won’t be able to run the Oakville Half-Marathon, and I’ve withdrawn from pacing it this year. If I hadn’t already registered for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon as the 2:45 pacer, I would have given up hope for any sort of running this season. But[…continue reading]

So, What Next?

Yeah, I’ve got the hardest part of my season still ahead of me, but I like to think ahead. I’m constantly scheming and planning. It helps me distract myself during training to think about what’s next. And it helps to keep me focused through a season to see that life goes on after I appreciate that it’s almost inappropriate to try to plan so far ahead even though I’m still about 4 weeks from my goal race of the New York City Marathon.  But, I’ve already registered to running the Goofy Challenge again in January. It requires a special kind of preparation to do a marathon[…continue reading]

With the time of year, I could call this a “back to school” article, except that I’m back to training after an injury. So, a few weeks ago I got a pretty bad scare when I was worried that I had a stress fracture in my foot. There were a few things that could have caused it. The first was that I was trying a new shoe that was half-a-size too small and was putting a lot of pressure on the top of my foot. The second and more likely cause was overtraining. I had a wonderfully intense week on[…continue reading]
