There’s No Such Thing As “Fit”

You’ll have to excuse the inflammatory title. It’s meant to be eye-catching, but not entirely misleading. I’ve been on an interesting journey this winter: I have been exceptionally busy, and with limited time (and lousy weather) I didn’t run as much as I have in previous years. As a result, my running fitness is pretty poor by comparison (see my time from the recent Chilly Half-Marathon). And I’m heavier than I’ve been in a long time. But, does that mean I’m currently “un-fit”? I am winding up a person training contract that had me going to the gym 3-times a week. If[…continue reading]

7 weeks to a half-marathon?!

So, I’ve been slacking and in a funk. I haven’t run much since the Mississauga Half-Marathon. I took almost a whole month off, then injured my knee, back, and ankle. I’ve actually been fully-healed for weeks, but haven’t had the will to get out and really start training again. As my slacking intensified, I’ve realized I won’t be able to run the Oakville Half-Marathon, and I’ve withdrawn from pacing it this year. If I hadn’t already registered for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon as the 2:45 pacer, I would have given up hope for any sort of running this season. But[…continue reading]

TCS NYC Marathon Results Magazine

I received a magazine in the mail about a month ago. Getting magazines isn’t usual for me because I have a number of subscriptions, but this one was special. I reported that I ran the New York City Marathon last November. This is the official magazine of the results.     It’s a nice commemorative piece in general, especially considering how much I paid for the race! But there’s something about this magazine that makes it extra special for me. There were almost 50,000 people that finished this race, including many elite athletes and celebrities. But somewhere in this list of finishers, there’s me.[…continue reading]

New Year’s Resolutions 2016

As New Year’s Resolution posts go, I’m VERY late. January’s almost over and I’m finally getting around to publishing this. But, better late than never! And, I better get this out before I have to write a January review!!   Unlike last year, a lot of my resolutions this year are much more difficult to quantify. I don’t think I can make them all SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Sensitive), but I’ll try.   SET NEW HALF-MARATHON PB I want to beat my current half-marathon personal best of 2:03:22 which I set during the 2012 Chilly Half-Marathon. Since I’ve already[…continue reading]

So, What Next?

Yeah, I’ve got the hardest part of my season still ahead of me, but I like to think ahead. I’m constantly scheming and planning. It helps me distract myself during training to think about what’s next. And it helps to keep me focused through a season to see that life goes on after I appreciate that it’s almost inappropriate to try to plan so far ahead even though I’m still about 4 weeks from my goal race of the New York City Marathon.  But, I’ve already registered to running the Goofy Challenge again in January. It requires a special kind of preparation to do a marathon[…continue reading]
