There’s No Such Thing As “Fit”

You’ll have to excuse the inflammatory title. It’s meant to be eye-catching, but not entirely misleading. I’ve been on an interesting journey this winter: I have been exceptionally busy, and with limited time (and lousy weather) I didn’t run as much as I have in previous years. As a result, my running fitness is pretty poor by comparison (see my time from the recent Chilly Half-Marathon). And I’m heavier than I’ve been in a long time. But, does that mean I’m currently “un-fit”? I am winding up a person training contract that had me going to the gym 3-times a week. If[…continue reading]

Time and reassuring words from many dear running friends has help soothe my sore feelings after the Ottawa Army Run didn’t go as well as planned. And a little reality check has helped me refocus. I’ve had a lot off time to think about what happened at Ottawa. I don’t think I was physically ready to do the half in under 2 hours, but I could have been closer than what happened. In addition to the plethora of excuses I laid bare in that post, I[…continue reading]

The “Bibgate” incident happened months ago, and I think this is a good time to reflect on it. For those who don’t know, “Bibgate” was the name being passed around running circles about some unsavory activities at the Boston Marathon. It was first brought to my attention when the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) posted something cryptic about reviewing results. Later, a few articles like this one and this one detailed what happened and had the photos to prove it. There were a lot of people photographed wearing identical bibs at the Boston Marathon. That means several people ran the race illegally.[…continue reading]
