There’s No Such Thing As “Fit”

You’ll have to excuse the inflammatory title. It’s meant to be eye-catching, but not entirely misleading. I’ve been on an interesting journey this winter: I have been exceptionally busy, and with limited time (and lousy weather) I didn’t run as much as I have in previous years. As a result, my running fitness is pretty poor by comparison (see my time from the recent Chilly Half-Marathon). And I’m heavier than I’ve been in a long time. But, does that mean I’m currently “un-fit”? I am winding up a person training contract that had me going to the gym 3-times a week. If[…continue reading]

I’ve talked about Body Image quite a bit on this blog. In fact, it has its own tag. It’s because of body image issued that I have been reluctant to run in a tank top or singlet because I was was AM self-conscious about my flabby arms. I feel like I would be embarrassed by my fat arms jiggling as I run, so ever since I’ve started running I’ve never had bare arms. I know that I really would benefit from running sleeveless. Even on really cold runs, I do most of my sweating from my upper torso. It seems like most[…continue reading]

I recently ‘liked‘ Canadian CrossFit athlete Camille Leblanc-Bazinet. You can ‘like‘ her too on facebook, follow her on twitter, see her videos on youtube, or read her BNS profile. Her fame recently exploded as she won the 2014 Reebok Crossfit Games and earned the title of “Fittest Woman in the World“. (I definitely put “Fittest” in quotes. She is incredibly fit, and I’m sure she deserves the title of greatest CrossFit athlete. But, I don’t agree that CrossFit’s definition the 10 elements or components of fitness. CrossFit makes you good at CrossFit, not necessarily other things. Actually, there are a lot of things I[…continue reading]

This is a different kind of Motivation Monday post, especially after we’ve probably all consumed exorbitant amounts of food for Thanksgiving. I’ve talked about body image a lot (a lot, a lot, a lot). It kind of haunts me but it is a motivating factor in getting healthy. I saw the summer blockbuster movie Guardians of the Galaxy a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Although it was incredibly campy and over the top, it was entertaining in all the ways I love. Among the beautiful special effects, clever dialogue, interesting characters, kitschy 80’s references, and crowning moments of funny, there was something else. The protagonist[…continue reading]

(Warning: Most of this post was written right after a long run, and finished while slightly delirious from an overtraining cold. Enjoy!) Do you know how on a long run, how your mind starts to wander, even though you should be focusing on form, and not the nagging in your left foot, or how your right hip is unusually stiff, or how you should stand upright, or focus the music on your iPod, and avoid the cars, and keep an eye out for dogs, while thinking about if you locked the door, and wonder if something is chafing, and fighting[…continue reading]
