Loco Moco Recipe

Here’s a recipe for something different, and a little exotic, but strangely quite familiar.

When my wife and I went to Hawaii for our honeymoon, we had to grab a quick lunch during a stop on our bus tour of Oahu. We were at the Dole Pineapple Plantation and had only a few minutes to grab something for lunch. We saw something on the menu called “Loco Moco” we were not disappointed!

Loco Moco ordered from the cafeteria at the Dole Pineapple Plantation in Oahu, Hawaii.

Loco Moco is a Hawaiian contemporary dish essentially consisting of rice, a hamburger patty, fried egg, and brown gravy. There are variations this is the core version.

The first time we cooked it back here at home was because it was a novel way to use leftover burgers and rice.

Ingredients:

Prepare each of the items separately: Cook the rice as you normally would, in our case we use a rice cooker. The burgers were grilled on the BBQ. The Gravy was prepared as per the instructions on the package, combining the powder with water and heating in a small pot.

Perhaps the only critical preparation is in regards to the egg. It should probably be cooked “sunny-side up”. It could be poached, or even “over easy”, but you want the yolk to be a little runny.

To assemble the Loco Moco, place the hamburger on a bed of rice. Carefully place the egg on top of the burger, and pour the gravy over the egg and let it ooze over the burger and rice.

My version of the “classic” Loco Moco

These ingredients don’t seem to inherently go together. But a combined bite of the gravy, yolk, burger, and rice, yields a savory, yummy, umami texture and flavour that is quite spectacular.

A different angle of the “classic” Loco Moco preparation

Of course, there are possible variations too. Recently, we assembled a Loco Moco using chicken burgers instead of hamburgers, and added a “moat” of peas.

So, when you have some rice and burgers lying around, try making a Loco Moco. Hope yours is “onolicious“!
