This is now a time-honoured tradition with Square One Running Room runners. 2 nights before the race we have the cheat meal to end all cheat meals! This was no different! It’s also an opportunity to share with the family and friends that have tolerated our running habit all winter long.
And it was Tracey’s birthday! Happy Birthday Tracey!!
I don’t know how this tradition got started, but it’s brilliant for many reasons. Firstly, it forces you to make sure you have every last piece of gear collected and assembled prior to the race. And, it makes for a great photo to share pre-race. And, lastly, it feels kinda silly, which is a nice way of making such as serious marathon feel less serious.
It’s supposed to get up to about 21ºC on Sunday. Considering that -21ºC was common this winter, that will seem VERY warm. I will tolerate a little chill at the start and wear shorts so that I don’t overheat later in the race.
I decided to go with my favourite colour of yellow: Yellow shirt that I bought in California after the DisneyLand half-marathon last fall. And a yellow visor that I got in Las Vegas at the expo for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half-Marathon last fall. Sunglasses seem mandatory for day races. And the gloves will keep my hands warm in the early part of the race.
Early to Bed
This seems like a funny ritual to non-runners. I turned down quite a few social calls to make sure I turned in very early before the race. 7:30pm seems crazy early, especially since there is still sunlight. But, I need to wake up around 4:30am to get dressed, fed, and to the shuttle bus by 6:00am. Then the race starts at 7:30am when most of Toronto will still be fast asleep.
